BWC Employees Receive National Research Award

Three BWC employees were recently presented the Alice Hamilton Award for Occupational Safety and Health in the Epidemiology and Surveillance category for their published research. Mike Lampl, Dave Robins, Steve Naber, and five members of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Center for Workers’ Compensation Studies wrote a paper titled “Workers’ Compensation Claim Counts and Rates by Injury Event/Exposure among State-Insured Private Employers in Ohio, 2007-2017,” which was published in the Journal of Safety Research.

The Alice Hamilton Awards for Occupational Safety and Health are presented by NIOSH each year based on rigorous reviews by panels of scientific experts. They recognize the scientific excellence of technical and instructional materials by NIOSH scientists and engineers in the areas of biological science, engineering and physical science, human studies, and educational materials.

The award is named after Alice Hamilton, MD, a pioneering researcher and occupational physician. Many early laws to improve workers’ health came from her work. The 2022 awards were presented on April 28 in an online ceremony.

Mike, Dave, and Steve contributed to the study by providing expertise regarding the Oho BWC data used in the study, reviewing the analyses and their results, and assisting in the preparation of the paper. This study is one of over 30 studies conducted jointly by NIOSH and the DSH Research Department over the past 15 years.

The Division of Safety & Hygiene research department focuses on protecting Ohio workers from workplace injury and illness, improving injury and illness prevention strategies, and determining optimal allocation of resources to areas of potential impact.
